Chapter Eleven

Everett

I was beyond pissed off. Bethany had flipped me away as if I were an annoying fly and didn’t have the right to want to take care of her or protect her. It was as if all of our time together had meant nothing, and I was indeed just that farm boy who didn’t get the girl in the end.

I made my way to the main building, needing to yell at someone. Maybe Eli. Yes, he was a good target because he was supposed to be in charge of the security for the whole property. Yet Dallas and Cassandra had been able to enter the property with nobody knowing.

I wanted to know exactly how that had happened.

Before I could make it in, Elijah and Joy walked out, hand in hand. And from the scowl on Elijah’s face and the way that he looked at me, I knew that word had spread.

“Come with me.”

I scowled. “I’m sorry, you’re not my dad. In fact, I’m older than you. Don’t tell me what to do.”

“Don’t act like a jackass, and I won’t have to tell you what to do.”

“Always.”

I looked over at Joy, but she shook her head at the both of us.

“Come with us. There are a few things we have to talk about, and it would probably be better if we didn’t blast all of her news and life story to the guests here. Come on. We can handle this.”

Joy sounded so calm and collected, and I didn’t want to yell at her.

“Where am I supposed to go?”

“Follow me.” Elijah sighed. “I’m trying not to order you around, but I’m asking. Eli is handling it. We will all handle it. But I know you, and if you are stomping over here already growling, then we have to have a talk.”

I followed him, not because I wanted to, but because it was the right thing to do. And I trusted Elijah. It didn’t matter that technically he was my little brother, he would always act like a big brother to all of us. Just like Eli.

It must be the suit. It was a perfect pair to Joy’s business casual dress.

We made our way around the main building and towards East’s hidey-hole. My twin had his own building for maintenance and other things, even though his main office was in the main house. I didn’t see East around, so when Elijah gestured for Joy and me to go inside, I went.

“I don’t think East is going to appreciate us being here.”

“Probably not, but it was the closest place for privacy. This way you can yell, and nobody will hear you scream.”

Joy rolled her eyes. “Oh, that’s good. That’s good. Make a horror movie where I’m alone in a place with sharp tools with two men.”

I smiled, but it was only half-hearted. “You’re safe with us.” I paused. “So, I take it you know what happened with Bethany?”

“Part of it. Dallas Huntington and his new woman showed up and were able to get through security because she was on the guest list of the event.
